Saladin’s Secret part 1

Narrated by David Sweeney-Bear.

Destiny’s War audiobook is released! Finding the right narrator to bring the story to life is not as easy as one would think, especially for Destiny’s War, due to the period and rich dialogue. There are amazing narrators out there, but finding the right one was a bit of luck with some trial and error. When I first heard David Sweeney-Bear’s Dune and Hitchhikers Guide, I knew he was the one. David’s narration, coupled with the ability to mix distinct dialogue with the tone, tenor, and accent was needed for Destiny’s War.

Marion, the narrator and main character of the story, is an American. He spent his teenage years in the Middle East prior to the First World War. During the early 20th century the British had been a sweeping influence in the region and those who spoke English, did so with a distinctly British accent. One can only imagine the influence on the young Marion’s dialect. There are no recordings from the era and we imagine Marion had a unique accent, almost transatlantic with perhaps some rhoticity inflections in English.

David, who has studied and recorded the works of the great authors; Shakespeare, Tennyson, Samuel Taylor Coleridge as well as Orwell, Dickens and Oscar Wilde, and of course hailing from the other side of the Atlantic predominantly in the United Kingdom and Ireland, agreed.  It would be challenging and certainly a novel approach to help bring some authenticity to the story.

In addition, characters such as Sergeant Sauer (a German now serving in the British Army), Smitty (an Indian who grew up in the seedier side of London with a Cockney accent), General Smith (famous general of the Camel Corps), and others would also require a distinct quality in their dialogue.

I am very excited to be working with narrator David Sweeney-Bear, his enthusiasm and engagement on the project is infectious and I look forward to listening to David’s narration of Destiny’s War.

David was able to find Marion’s unique voice, a young American, who has spent the last several years living Syria among the Bedouin and British Army. While English is Marion’s first language, he speaks German (his father was Swiss German) and also Arabic (he learned while living with the Bedouin). We are very excited to bring you Destiny’s War audiobook.
